WHAT STEPS CAN I TAKE TO PROMOTE MY WEBSITE?
General Information: Once you have spent time customizing your website to professionally and creatively complement and extend the unique message of your organization, you will want to make sure it is seen by as many visitors as possible.
At the basic level, you should include your website address on all of your marketing materials including: all stationary such as letterhead, envelopes, business cards, and also all advertisements, sponsorship announcements, written articles and profiles that may be published about your organization, all marketing pieces such as brochures, slicks, fliers, direct mailed and web-mailed promotional pieces and giveaway products such as pens, cups, key chains etc.
At a higher level, you should seek to register your website address with any network organizations, business associates, vendor partnerships, or professional affiliations who may have a widely known web address. It is advantageous to have your web address shown as links on other's websites representing your industry or affiliation, especially if they have significantly more web traffic than your own website. This can help drive hits to your site. Just take care to ensure that any site which links your site to its own will fairly and appropriately represent your company. Otherwise linking could be detrimental to your company's image.
After you finish coordinating your
META description (Meta tags are no longer used by search engines) with your Home Page content, publish your eVetsite with your own top level domain name (www.mypractice.com) and PLEASE BE PATIENT! Search engines like Google and Yahoo send out what are called "Web Crawlers" to seek out web site
META information for their registration and catalog process. It can take 10-60 days or more, for them to find your site as they "crawl" across the 100 million+ web sites in the universe. Again please be patient they are looking for you.
How come I'm not on Page 1 when I search my site?
After Google, Yahoo, MSN and other search engines find you, they rank your site (list you along with thousands of other web sites using your same keywords) by means of mind boggling algorithms using a variety of internet concepts. Keep in mind search results will vary from one search engine to another so there are no hard and fast rules that apply in all situations. Also, search engines are constantly changing their procedures to stay ahead of people who are constantly trying to fool them to "get to the top" of the list.
AT THIS TIME (summer 2011), a major factor in search engine ranking (where you appear in the list of thousands of other web sites) is "link popularity". Link popularity refers to the number of other SIMILAR web sites that have your URL (www.mypractice.com)listed on their site. The folks at Google and other search engines think this is a good indication that you're somebody important and have a very desirable web site that should be given list priority.
